3 Vt. towns explore shared ambulance service

Supporters say the arrangement would consolidate service, cut costs and give municipalities more control

ROYALTON, Vt. — Three Vermont towns are looking to create an ambulance service for the area, saying it could lower taxpayer costs.

The Valley News reports the project would affect Sharon, Royalton and Tunbridge.

Currently, residents of Sharon, Royalton and South Tunbridge receive service from the South Royalton Rescue Squad. Its assets are owned by the water district and village of South Royalton.

Residents in North Tunbridge and Chelsea are served by Chelsea-based First Branch Ambulance, a nonprofit organization governed by a board of trustees.

Each town allocates money to either South Royalton Rescue or First Branch for its services, or both in Tunbridge’s case.

Supporters say the new arrangement would consolidate service, cut costs and give municipalities more control.

A board would be created and comprised of members from each community.
