CHICAGO — A paramedic was injured when an ambulance was hit head-on by a car early Wednesday on the South Side, Chicago police said.
Authorities were called to a crash in the 8000 block of South Western Avenue in the Wrightwood neighborhood around 5:15 a.m. An ambulance was parked, “picking up a patient for transport when the ambulance was hit,” according to an email from Kellie Bartoli, a spokeswoman for Chicago police.
A car driven by a 38-year-old man drove into the ambulance, which contained two paramedics and the patient, she said. One of the paramedics, a 38-year-old woman, was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where her condition was stabilized. The second paramedic and the patient were not injured, officials said.
The 38-year-old driver of the car and a 23-year-old woman in the car also declined medical attention, according to police.
The driver, who was not named, was issued citations for failure to reduce speed, negligent driving and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, Bartoli said.
