MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in custody after plowing into two firefighter-paramedics who were working a separate car crash, WREG Memphis reported.
The Memphis Fire Department confirmed two of its responders had been injured while on scene, and both were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.
One of the injured firefighters suffered a broken leg, the Memphis Firefighters Association said.
The driver of the vehicle, Reginald McKenzie, 48, was driving in an emergency lane when he struck the responders and the ambulance on scene. He later admitted to having several drinks prior to the incident and has reportedly been charged with three DUIs since 2005.
McKenzie was arrested and charged with DUI, failure to stop for emergency vehicles, reckless driving and failing to exercise due care.
“Seriously Memphis drivers, it is ridiculous that you continue to crash into our Fire & EMS apparatus but when you seriously injure our 1st responders it is unforgivable,” Memphis Fire Chief Gina Sweat wrote in a post on Facebook. “Slow down and move over so we can do our jobs without fear of being assaulted by your vehicles.”
