BUDLE BAY, England — A teenage boy who became buried beneath the sand on a beach had to be airlifted to hospital.
The 14-year-old was on Budle Bay beach, near Bamburgh, Northumberland, when he become buried beneath the sand yesterday afternoon.
Northumbria Police were alerted at 2.15pm and sent officers to the scene.
A Great North Air Ambulance Service helicopter also attended, with a doctor on board, as did personnel from HM Coastguard and North East Ambulance Service.
It is thought the boy, who was on holiday, may have been buried by a collapsing dune. He was trapped by the weight of the sand and emergency services worked to free him.
Police said the boy was trapped up to his shoulders, although the air ambulance service said his head was submerged for a time and that efforts had to be made to free it so he could breathe.
The teenager was released around 4pm and taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by the air ambulance for a check-up.
The boy was said to be “fit and well” by police.
