Two people, including the suspected shooter, were killed and two others were wounded after the attack at an assisted living complex

WESTERLY, R.I. — One person was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting at a Rhode Island apartment complex Thursday morning.

Police said the suspected shooter was also dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to WJAR

The shooting occurred at Babcock Village Apartments in Westerly, which is marketed as “affordable housing for the elderly and disabled.” Police described the complex as an "assisted living facility" at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Police officials said two of the victims were employees at the facility and the third was a 66-year-old resident. The victim who was killed was one of the employees, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the shooter was also a 66-year-old resident.

All of the victims are female and the shooter is male, police said.

The two surviving victims were transported to different hospitals by Westerley Ambulance. One was said to be in critical condition and the other was said to be undergoing surgery at the time of the news conference.

Schools in Westerly were on lockdown as police responded to the shooting. Westerly Public Schools has since lifted the lockdown with students dismissed early.

The emergency room at Westerly Hospital was also put on lockdown.

“We are shocked and saddened that this tragedy has occurred. Our priority, as always, is the safety of our residents and staff. We are working with law enforcement to address this situation,” Property Advisory Group & Affordable Housing Strategies, Inc., which owns Babcock Village, said in a statement.
