SAN ANTONIO — A mother was arrested on suspicion of injuring her child after not being able to explain the severe head trauma that may have caused the child’s death.

Beaumont Enterprise reported that Jessica Briones carried her unresponsive 4-year-old daughter Olivia into a San Antonio police station. Olivia was rushed to the hospital, where doctors found severe brain swelling consistent with a strike to the head. She was pronounced dead the next day.

Briones said Olivia would not wake up that morning and was vomiting, according to police. She also said she accidentally slammed the door on Olivia’s arm, but she couldn’t give a reason for the severe head trauma.

The mother said she didn’t call 911 because her phone was low on minutes and she could not find it.

Olivia had eight scars on her scalp, a large abrasion on the back of her head, a deflated left lung, a swollen wrist, two swollen arms, and a bruised ankle and detached upper lip tissue.

The cause of Olivia’s death is not yet confirmed, but Briones’ charges could be upgraded depending on the medical examiner’s findings.
