FDNY EMS lieutenant dies from 9/11-related cancer

NEW YORK — A veteran EMS lieutenant died this week after battling cancer she developing from responding to the 9/11 attacks.

Lt. Edith Torres, 46, died Wednesday. She was off-duty when the World Trade Center was struck, but she responded regardless, reported NY Daily News.

Lt. Torres, a 23-year veteran, was diagnosed with a rare, fast-spreading form of cervical cancer October 2016.

“Lt. Edith Torres was a kind, caring dedicated professional who provided the best service to the people of New York City,” Vincent Variale, the head of the FDNY’s Uniformed EMS Officers Union, said. “It is with great sorrow we say goodbye to our sister, another 9/11 hero.”
