HANAHAN, S.C.— A South Carolina private ambulance service is ordered to pay 89 employees more than $200,000 in back wages.
Department of Labor officials ended an investigation into MedTrust Medical Transport, LLC, and concluded that the ambulance service violated federal overtime requirements, Count on News 2 reported.
According to investigators, MedTrust did not pay overtime to employees because officials filed an exemption incorrectly and said the company did not meet the requirements for that exemption. Medtrust was paying employees a fixed salary when they were working 48- to 72- hours workweeks.
“Guaranteed payments that are meant to include regular and overtime pay often fail to comply with the law and can result in significant back wage liabilities,” Wage and Hour Division District Director Jamie Benefiel said. “The U.S. Department of Labor encourages all employers to reach out to us for information on how to comply with the law. These mistakes can be avoided.”
