EATON RAPIDS, Mich. — These ambulances aren’t sitting, waiting for an emergency; they’re banned from going to one, after the state invesigated for complaints and found more than it expected.
“It got to a point where we had to immediately revoke their licenses because we were concerned about patient safety,” says James McCurtis, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Community Health.
Island City Area EMS, which services the Eaton Rapids area, and Delton Area EMS, which services parts of Barry County, are both owned by Eaton Rapids man A.J. DeWaele. In the 16 months Island City’s been responding to emergencies, they’ve racked up a startling amount of infractions.
