SAN FRANCISCO — Five people were rescued from San Francisco Bay on Saturday afternoon after three adults tried unsuccessfully to pull two children from its waters, a U.S. Coast Guard official said.
Just after 4 p.m., two preteen boys playing in an 8-foot rowboat were blown off the beach near Candlestick Point, prompting three adult witnesses to wade out and help them, Chief Petty Officer Mike Lutz said. The adults also found themselves unable to get back to the shore, stranding all five people out in the water.
The Coast Guard Sector San Francisco dispatched a 45-foot boat to rescue the five individuals at about 4:30 p.m. after a passing vessel alerted the Coast Guard to the rowboat’s location, Lutz said.
The crew rescued the two children and one adult with mild hypothermia and took them to the Oyster Point Marina, where they were evaluated by medical specialists and released, Lutz said. The other two adults were recovered by the San Francisco Marine Unit and returned to Candlestick Point uninjured.
