MONTERAY, Calif. — A teenage boy brought another youth to shore off Del Monte State Beach on Sunday but got into trouble himself as he paddled into the surf.

Monterey Fire Division Chief Paul Goodwin said the rescuer swam out to a boy who was in trouble and unable to swim to shore off Del Monte State Beach shortly before 4 p.m.

Seaside and Monterey firefighters responded, Goodwin said, and the rescuer was able to bring the other teenager close enough for them to bring him ashore.

However, Goodwin said, a wave flipped the board of the rescuing teenager, causing him to strike his head in the sand.

Both youths were given first aid at the scene and then taken by ambulance to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

State Parks lifeguards and the Coast Guard also responded but the two teenagers were out of the water by the time they arrived, Goodwin said.

He credited the one youth with aiding in the rescue but warned rescue attempts by untrained civilians should be undertaken with caution.
