2 Wis. men rescued after boat capsizes

A rescue operation was conducted by use of an air boat which successfully pulled the men from the icy water

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. — Two Prairie du Chien men avoided serious injuries when the boat they were in Wednesday capsized in the Mississippi River.

Richard Noel, 66, and Howard Hollenbech, 61, were transported by Interstate EMS to Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital for hypothermia. Both are expected to make a full recovery.

Crawford County authorities were notified at 9:50 a.m. of a boating accident north of the North Ambro Boat Landing in Prairie du Chien Township. Noel was operating a 14-foot jon boat when the boat overturned, ejecting Noel and Hollenbech, his passenger.

A rescue operation was conducted by use of an air boat which resulted in Noel and Hollenbech being successfully pulled from the icy water.

Assisting at the scene were the Bridgeport Fire Department, Bridgeport First Responders, Bagley Fire Department, Lancaster Fire Department, Wauzeka Fire Department, Grant County Tech Rescue, Interstate EMS, Crawford County Emergency Management, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, air boat owner/operator Kim Henkes and an unidentified air boat owner/operator.

The accident remains under investigation.
