KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. —Three Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputies were honored Tuesday, Sept. 9, for their life-saving actions on the job.
Deputies Don McCune and Chris Rager where honored for saving the life of a woman struck by a train on Sept. 25, 2013, according to a news release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
The officers were called to the Fort Wayne Street railroad crossing in Warsaw and found the woman underneath the train. She was critically injured and one arm had been amputated.
McCune and Rager climbed under the train and applied a makeshift tourniquet to the woman’s remaining arm to lessen her blood loss until paramedics arrived on scene.
Deputy Sheriff Neil Likens was honored for saving a man’s life after a shooting on Aug. 18, 2014.
Likens responded to a reported shooting in the Enchanted Hills Mobile Home Park and found two men with serious gunshot wounds. One was bleeding profusely from his femoral artery and Likens, who is also a certified EMT with the North Webster Tippecanoe Township E.M.S. and Fire Department, applied a tourniquet to control the blood loss, according to the news release.
Medical staff from Lutheran Hospital, where the man was treated, later told officers and medics that Likens’ actions :most likely save the subject’s life at the scene.“
The Individual Patrol Officer Kit tourniquet was provided by the generous funding of the K21 Health Foundation through a grant created by Multi-Township E.M.S. Paramedic Ryan Reed.
Kosciusko County Sheriff Rocky Goshert and Captain Aaron Rovenstine honored the three officers for their immediate response during a dangerous and stressful situation to save lives, according to the news release.
