HOUSTON — A paramedic who was hit by a foul ball in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series has been released from the hospital.
ABC13.com reported that paramedic Brian Cariota was in the Astros dugout when the foul ball from Houston’s Michael Brantley struck him. Cariota exited the game with a towel over his head.
Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole stayed with Cariota until he received medical attention, according to the report. The incident briefly halted the fifth inning and a shaken-up Brantley had to be consoled on the field by manager AJ Hinch.
“It was heart-wrenching. We didn’t know who it was, it was in the dugout, home dugout, and we weren’t sure who got hit,” fan Cindy Taylor said.
The Astros extended their protective netting at Minute Maid Park after a 2-year-old girl was struck and injured by a foul ball last year. However, the netting doesn’t protect the dugouts.
