WICHITA, Kan. — An employee of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway in Wellington was found pinned under a railcar Tuesday morning at approximately 2:20 a.m.
It took 45 minutes for paramedics to extract the man from under the railcar’s wheels. The railcar was an open-air car that carries rocks or coal. It was empty at the time.
Emergency crews used a jack to lift the car off the man.
He was transported to Sumner Regional Medical Center where he was airlifted to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in Wichita in critical condition.
The man lost both his legs, according to Wellington Fire Chief Tim Hay. The railway company is currently investigating the cause of the accident.
