MIDDLEBORO, Mass. — Five motorcycles traveling in a convoy southbound on Interstate 495 in Middleboro were involved in what state police believe was a possible chain reaction crash that caused several injuries.

According to state police, the accident occured about 4 p.m. yesterday.

The extent of the injuries was unknown, but Lt. David Wilson of the Massachusetts State Police said two of the victims were flown by helicopter and three others were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals.

The helicopter landed an estimated 20 minutes after the accident, which lead to a major traffic backup on I-495 southbound. State police said that at least one lane was reopened and the traffic was stalled for about an hour.

It has not been determined if speed or alcohol was a factor in the motorcycle accident. An investigation is ongoing. The victims’ names were not released.
