LAWTON, Okla. — The pilot of a medical helicopter avoided power lines and buildings when the helicopter crashed early Thursday near a hospital, Lawton Assistant City Manager Jim Russell said.

Russell said the pilot was trying to land a Survival Flight helicopter at about 6 a.m. at Comanche County Memorial Hospital, 3401 W Gore Blvd., when there was some sort of mechanical failure.

Two pilots and two medical assistants were aboard, but no patients.

“He (the pilot) did an amazing job,” Russell said.

The helicopter landed upright when it crashed. There were minor injuries suffered by the crew but no one was hospitalized, Russell said.

Russell said Gore Boulevard will be closed Thursday until investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration arrive.
