Wis. men jailed for phony fire calls, stealing drugs

The men would lure firefighters out of their station with fake calls and sneak into steal medications and drugs

RACINE, Wis. — A Wis. man has been sentenced to a three-year probation for luring firefighters out of their firehouse with a fake fire call so that he could steal medication.

Charles J. Peters, 20, was also sentenced to nine months in jail by a Racine County Circuit Judge. He must serve those nine months within his three-year probation, according to Journal Times.

Peters pleaded guilty to burglary in exchange for his other charges to be dropped, including drug and theft.

In March last year, firefighters received an early morning call about a structure fire. When crews were leaving the station, some noticed someone slip inside, and when they returned from the phony fire, they found medications missing from the firehouse and ambulances.

Peters’ accomplice, Gary M. Smith, 21, has also been sentenced to a three-year probation and will serve eight months in jail with 80 hours of community service.

Smith used to be an intern for another Wis. fire department. He made a fake fire call and snuck into the station to steal morphine and other drugs.
