WETUMPKA, Ala. — An Elmore County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed an armed, off-duty Montgomery firefighter Tuesday night while answering a domestic violence call, said Sheriff Bill Franklin.

Jeremy Acre, 34, of Hogan Road in the Holtville community, was shot once in the upper torso and died at the scene, the sheriff said. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, standard procedure for when an officer is involved in a shooting, Franklin said.

Montgomery Public Safety Department spokeswoman Martha Earnhardt confirmed that Acre was a firefighter with the Montgomery Fire Department. He was hired in 1999 and was an Elmore County resident, she said.
