CHICAGO — A man survived with just a few broken bones after being struck by an Amtrak train traveling over 100 mph Friday.
NBC Chicago reported that Darryle See, 22, was alert and talking to police after being thrown 20 feet from the tracks. Police said he was listening to music with headphones while walking on the tracks.
Conductors said they sounded the train’s horn several times before applying the emergency brakes and hitting See, according to the report. Train officials said they were traveling at 110 mph at the time of the accident.
LaPorte County Police Maj. John Boyd said he’s never heard of any pedestrians surviving a full-impact hit by a train.
“It was absolutely amazing,” he said. “I’ve seen a number of people get hit by trains and it’s never a good thing.”
See was bleeding and had some visible injuries, but he was sitting up and able to tell police what happened, according to the report. He was transported to a local hospital with neck injuries and a fractured pelvis, but his injuries were not life-threatening, according to the report.
