SENOIA, Ga. — A 15-month-old child was rescued Friday morning after falling into a septic tank and being revived by a family friend who performed CPR until emergency responders arrived.
The child was air-flighted by helicopter ambulance to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston hospital as a precaution.
“The child was conscious and alert on the scene when Air Life 4 departed the scene with the child,” said Captain Craig Sherrer with the Coweta County Fire Department.
Rescuers were called out about 10:30 a.m. to a report that a child had fallen into a drainage ditch on Old Highway 85, the captain said. The location is in southeastern Coweta County near Senoia.
“Upon arrival, Advanced Life Support 15 found a 15-month-old child that had been extricated by his mother and a friend from a septic tank that the lid had been left off of,” Sherrer said. “The friend of the mother performed CPR on the child and revived the child.” The child was in the septic tank for about two minutes, according to what the mother told officials.
“Our crews performed patient care and requested an air ambulance for transport to a children’s hospital for further evaluation and care,” he said, adding an EMS team took over after that until the child was turned over to the air ambulance crew.
“The mother and friend were decontaminated on-scene and advised to follow up with primary medical doctors for possibility of infection,” Sherrer said.
The tank lid was replaced and caution tape placed around it.
