FONTANA, Calif. — Firefighters rescued three fellow firefighters, three medics and a patient who became trapped in a multi-story apartment complex elevator Saturday.
A San Bernardino County paramedic squad and American Medical Response ambulance crew were moving a non-critical patient on a gurney, and entered the elevator to take them down to the ground level to load the patient into the ambulance, according to the Fontana Herald-News.
A mechanical failure caused the elevator to break down just as the doors closed, and the seven people found themselves stuck. The firefighters in the elevator requested assistance and one engine, a ladder truck and a chief officer responded.
After several unsuccessful tries to access the elevator, an Urban Search and Rescue unit from the county fire department was sent to the scene and eventually got everyone out safely.
