FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — An Arizona man was seriously hurt when a room-size boulder slid down onto a mountain road and landed on him while he and some other workers were trying to move another boulder out of the road.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office says the 27-year-old Phoenix man was hospitalized with injuries to his legs and pelvis after being hit by the 30-ton rock.

The Sheriff’s Office says the man and four other people were trying to go to the top of Mount Elden near Flagstaff to work on a radio tower Tuesday.

Heavy rain had fallen in the area, and the boulder hit the man after sliding down a slope and onto the road where the other large boulder had previously fallen.

The man’s companions called for help but were able to remove him from underneath the boulder before responders arrived.
