BALTIMORE — A volunteer firefighter-EMT was found fatally shot in his home Thursday.

FOX Baltimore reported that Jon Hickey, 31, was found by police after his family grew concerned because they had not heard from him.

Police said they found Hickey with a gunshot wound to his head, and the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

Hickey’s mother said the firefighter had just moved to Baltimore around three months ago and was working to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a Baltimore Fire Department firefighter by recently being accepted to the Baltimore City Fire Academy.

“His grandfather was in the fire department,” Hickey’s mother said. “He wanted to follow him. I was even getting my father’s badge for him so when he graduated I could pin it on him. Now, I can’t even do that.”

Hickey had served as a volunteer firefighter-EMT for several communities such as Woodlawn, Reisterstown, Owings Mills and Landsdowne, all of which expressed their grief on Facebook.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with funeral expenses.
