SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas —An EMT who was responding to the tragic church shooting realized her family attended the same church while she was en route to the scene.
ABC News reported that EMT Torie McCallum was on her way to a shooting scene when she learned she was going to First Baptist Church, where her family members attended services.
“My heart immediately sank,” McCallum said. “I made it to the scene to see if I could see who was flown out and who was taken; if they had a list.”
McCallum said she showed another EMS provider a photo of her niece, “and he said that was her.”
McCallum’s sister-in-law, Crystal Holcombe, and Holcombe’s three children, Emily, Megan and Greg, all died in the shooting. Holcombe was pregnant at the time, according to police.
Holcombe’s husband and McCallum’s brother died in 2011, and Holcombe remarried. She was a mother of five.
“I didn’t want to leave,” McCallum said. “I wanted to see them get out of that church.”
Holcombe and her children are survived by her husband and two of their children. A GoFundMe has been set up to help with funeral costs, click here to donate.
