WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — West Hartford police have charged a 33-year-old woman with manslaughter and drunken driving in connection with a head-on car crash that killed a paramedic in March.

Authorities say Karen Torres of New Britain had a blood-alcohol content of .212 — more than twice the legal limit — and was driving 55 mph in a 30 mph zone when she crashed into Donavan Alden’s car. She was arrested Thursday and released on a $75,000 bond.

Police say Alden, of Avon, was driving to his job as a paramedic with American Medical Response when the accident happened. He was 32.

A message seeking comment was left Friday at a phone listing for Torres. It’s not clear if she has a lawyer.

She’s scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on June 5.
