NEW DELHI, India — An Indian schoolboy died after accidentally shooting himself while posing for a selfie with his father’s handgun, police said Monday.
Ramandeep Singh, 15, inadvertantly pulled the gun’s trigger while taking the photo at his home in Pathankot city in the northern state of Punjab on Friday.
He was taken to hospital in a nearby city, where he died on Sunday, senior police officer Manoj Kumar said.
“The father told us that the boy shot himself in the head while taking a selfie with his licensed revolver. The family is in a state of shock over the tragic incident,” Kumar said by phone.
“The loaded gun was not put on lock. We have begun investigations into the case,” he added.
India has reported a number of selfie-related deaths in recent months. In January, a teenager died in the southern city of Chennai while trying to take a selfie on railway tracks.
In the same month, police in Mumbai created “no-selfie zones” after a university girl fell into the sea and drowned while taking a photo of herself with her phone. A man who jumped into the water to try to save her also drowned.
