Tesla turns power on at Puerto Rico children’s hospital

Hospital del Nino, which serves around 3,000 children, has power again in the wake of Hurricane Maria thanks to a new solar power system

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Tesla helped get a Puerto Rico children’s hospital up and running again by providing it with power in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

ABC News reported that Tesla officials, along with Puerto Rico’s governor, announced the new system is providing solar-generated electricity to Hospital del Nino, which provides care to around 3,000 children and houses around 30 children that need round-the-clock care.

Tesla’s system generates electricity through solar panels during the day, and batteries store the power to distribute it at night.

The power system comes less than three weeks after Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that Tesla could provide energy to Puerto Rico with solar power, to which Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello replied, “Let’s talk.”

“I’ve never seen a team arrive so fast and work so fast. They built this in a week,” Hospital del Nino’s chairman of the board Rafael Pagán said.
