The San Francisco Paramedic Association, the City and County of San Francisco, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association, the American Heart Association and the Heart Safe Region Task Force teamed up to hold a free, mass “Sidewalk CPR” training event at City Hall at the Civic Center Plaza to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the development of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Volunteer CPR instructors from the San Francisco Paramedic Association were on hand to train several hundred people in adult/child/infant CPR, AED and choking rescue with the Act+Fast Anti Choking Trainer and CPR mannequins.
At the press conference spokespersons from the American Heart Association, cardiac arrest survivors and their rescuers spoke to the urgency of training the public in bystander CPR. The message of the day was: CPR and choking rescue training are easy to learn, cheap to acquire, and may save a life.
According to the American Heart Association, each year EMS personnel treat nearly 300,000 people who suffer cardiac arrest at home, at work or in other public locations. San Francisco’s statistics show that less than 8 percent of cardiac arrest victims survive -- largely due to bystanders’ lack of action. Moreover, thousands of Americans die from choking every year. These deaths are preventable if the correct Abdominal Thrust technique is administered in time.

The goal of “Sidewalk CPR” is to make a Bay Area-wide impact and garner significant media attention for these vital, life saving skills. Sudden cardiac arrest can strike ANYONE - when it does a victim’s survival depends on bystanders rising to the occasion! When provided immediately, CPR can double even triple the chance of survival. Being prepared and learning how to save a life can significantly reduce the number one cause of death in the United States.
