COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — A firefighter who went into cardiac arrest was saved by his wife after she used her CPR training to revive him.
KHQ reported that Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Captain Luke Pichette and his wife, Jessica, were getting ready for bed in December when he began making strange noises. Jessica thought he was having a stroke.
“I started dialing 911 at that time, kind of rolled him over and at that time he did a big deep breath and then he was gone, he was not breathing, his eyes were rolled back,” Jessica said.
Luke had gone into cardiac arrest, so Jessica performed CPR on him while on the phone with 911.
“I did chest compressions a few times, I checked for a pulse, I could not find a pulse,” she said.
Jessica performed CPR on Luke for six minutes until responders arrived to transport him to the hospital.
“As a firefighter’s wife or as a police officer’s wife you worry about your husband or your wife at work, you don’t worry about them at home, you think that’s their safe place,” Jessica said. “My husband died in front of me at home, I watched it happen at home and it was terrifying.”
