BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Rushing to the site where two fishermen were struggling against the strong current off a Seaside Park breakwater Tuesday, lifeguards encountered a chaotic scene when several civilian rescuers also got swamped.
“Incidents like this rarely happen. I’ve never had to do a rescue with multiple victims before,” Chris Hamilton, 25, the Seaside lifeguard supervisor, said Wednesday.
Hamilton, a lifeguard for nine years, was among the first to arrive at the scene after receiving an emergency call about two men in distress off the breakwater opposite the park’s Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
