MASON CITY, Iowa — A paramedic helped deliver a baby in an ambulance earlier this month.

Paige Lohmann was at home when she began to go into labor and her boyfriend rushed her to the hospital. While en route, Lohmann’s contractions became more intense, and she knew she wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time.

“I was just shocked by how fast everything was going, I was nervous, scared,” Lohmann told KIMT.

The couple called 911, and Mason City Fire paramedics responded. However, paramedics pulled over after Lohmann went into active labor.

“When she told me that it was coming, that’s when I knew it was coming,” paramedic Neil Maki said.

After the delivery, Lohmann was transported to the hospital with her newborn son. This was Maki’s first time delivering a baby.

“It’s nice to be on a call that’s exciting rather than some of the other ones that aren’t so good for us, makes you feel like that’s why you’re doing what you’re doing,” Maki said.
