TOWN OF LOCKPORT, N.Y. — A stretch of South Transit Road was blocked off between Shimer and Strauss roads for at least an hour Tuesday afternoon as emergency services responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a Rural-Metro Medical Services ambulance.

Both vehicles were heading south when the accident occurred. The ambulance was transporting a patient to a hospital in Buffalo and had its lights and sirens on, Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brian Harrer said.

“The vehicle was in the outer lane and attempted to move into the turning lane into Walmart when the crash occurred,” Harrer said. “The driver of the vehicle said that she didn’t see the lights.”

Both driver and passenger of the ambulance and the driver of the vehicle were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. No serious injuries were reported.

Another emergency vehicle arrived to take the patient to the hospital.

The ambulance was towed from the scene.

“There was some leakage of fluids, that’s why it was towed,” Harrer said.

The driver, a 62-year-old Town of Lockport resident, received a ticket for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
