LA CROSSE, Wis. – Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance is one of two EMS services in Wisconsin to administer tranexamic acid or TXA to trauma patients.
The drug is administered to patients with a severe hemorrhage and prevents the breakdown of clots and helps slow bleeding, WEAU reported.
TXA has been in use around the world for about 40 years and has recently been used to treat soldiers injured on the battlefield.
Tri-State Ambulance has used TXA a couple of times since adding it to their protocols in December, 2013.
“We want to be on the cutting edge of the most appropriate care, and medicine is a rapidly evolving specialty, and especially in EMS right now there’s a lot of changes going on,” said medical director Dr. Chris Eberlein to WEAU.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services said TXA has been used in Milwaukee County since September 2014.
