TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Indiana is now requiring EMTs to receive more training or risk dropping to a lower rank. There are currently five certification levels, with the new requirements there will be only three. If EMTs don’t receive the new certification, they won’t be able to use many of the life saving skills they’ve used their entire careers. More than 20 emergency responders in Terre Haute will lose their rank this summer.
“They’ll still be able to provide a basic level of care such as oxygen administration and patient assessment,” said Terre Haute Fire Department Captain Scott Dalton.
The new certifications requires EMTs to receive at least 100 hours of training and several tests. Those who pass will be able to administer life saving techniques.
