Va. medic receives Governor’s Award for EMS education

A first responder for 29 years, she coordinates a wide range of training, from people new to the field, to those looking for continual education to maintain their certifications.

YORK COUNTY, Va. — Years ago, York County senior advanced life support technician, firefighter/paramedic and EMS educator Melissa Doak went to McDonald’s with her daughter for lunch.

They sat down in a booth and began to eat when an elderly man approached and told Doak “thank you for saving my life.” She had responded to a call involving the man in the past, and now he was right there, affirming Doak’s work.

“I appreciate that he did that and that he said that in front of my child because she just knows mommy goes to work and doesn’t really understand the impact of what we do,” Doak said. “It’s pretty impressive to me that he would go out of his way in public to say thank you.”
