TROY, Mich. — When Troy resident and emergency room doctor Ali Taqi isn’t busy with his young family — wife Amena, and sons Kazim, Zain and Esa — he’s fighting fires, serving as one of four physicians statewide on a search and rescue team, or traveling overseas to help perform cleft palate surgery for disadvantaged children.
Taqi, an 18-year volunteer assigned to Station 6, was selected by his peers as Firefighter of the Year for 2015.
“He’s got a strong commitment to the community,” said Troy Fire Chief William Nelson. Taqi, who was raised in Troy, always wanted to be a fireman, but his parents, who also live in Troy and immigrated to the U.S. from India 50 years ago, wanted him to study medicine.
