ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — Three deaths have been confirmed after Hurricane Irma hit the eastern Caribbean Wednesday.
New York Times reported that two deaths occurred in the French Caribbean and one occurred in the British territory Anguilla, prompting French President Emmanuel Macron to say there will be “victims to lament.”
President Macron said the damage has not fully been assessed yet but the aftermath would be “harsh and cruel.”
The storm, which made landfall with winds of up to 185 mph and is currently a Category 5 hurricane, is now headed to Puerto Rico and threatening the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba.
President Trump declared a State of Emergency in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The storm is expected to make landfall in Florida on Sunday.
