PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A baby wouldn’t wait for his mother to get to the hospital -- or for help to arrive -- before making his appearance on Tuesday morning on the Parkway East.
“We got there, and she already had (the baby),” state police Trooper Robin Mungo said.
Dispatchers alerted paramedics at 12:20 a.m. of the situation about a mile before the Glenwood exit, then called again a minute later to say the baby had been born, city EMS Deputy Chief Mark Bocian said.
“He said his wife just delivered on the side of the road, and sure enough, she delivered herself on the side of the road,” paramedic crew chief Richard Colaizzi said. “Mom was fantastic, and the baby looked perfect. She kept him really warm.”
Medics took the mother and newborn to Magee-Womens Hospital in Oakland.
Medics and police would not identify the woman, who declined to be interviewed through a hospital spokeswoman.
The husband was driving the couple from their home in Forest Hills, Colaizzi said.
“They were less than two miles away,” Colaizzi said. “You figure it would be a nice easy ride to the hospital.”
Colaizzi said the husband laid a blanket on the hillside, and the wife delivered there. The couple have a 3-year-old child, he said.
It’s not rare for medics to be called to deliveries, he said.
“This was a very easy one,” Colaizzi said. “Mom did a great job and the baby was healthy, and everything went real well. It was very nice for us to be there with their special moment.”
