RIO DE JANEIRO — At least 229 people were injured when a train stopped at a station was rear ended by another train.

Of those injured, 129 people were hospitalized, and 47 have been discharged so far, Rt.com reports.

The collision occurred in Mesquita around 8:20 pm, and the army assisted with rescue operations.

Passengers told the media there was panic and screaming when the lights went out, and many people were afraid the train was going to explode.

The trains had been moving slowly due to bad weather, and operations were halted after the incident.

The driver of the crashed train wasn’t injured and is expected to be a witness.
