LOS ANGELES — A search is underway for a man who fatally stabbed a 2-year-old girl and injured a woman Monday night in their home in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The attack occurred shortly before 10 p.m. at their home in the 3500 block of Arlington Avenue, Los Angeles Police Officer Liliana Preciado said.

Officers responded to a report of a battery that required an ambulance at the home, she said. The woman was found inside with stab wounds. The child was stabbed multiple times.

Both were taken to the hospital, where the girl was pronounced dead, Preciado said. The woman, in her 30s, remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Police cordoned off the home in the Exposition Park neighborhood as they investigated the attack. Officers were searching Tuesday morning for a man in his 20s.
