COLUMBUS, Ohio — The first mobile coronary-care unit in the United States was developed in 1969 by Ohio State University and the Columbus Fire Department.
The “Heartmobile” was designed to speed treatment to people having heart attacks, and it was the precursor to the paramedic programs across the country today.
The 25-foot-long van was customized with emergency-room equipment and stationed at the OSU Medical Center. It was part of a study to see whether earlier treatment of heart-attack victims would improve survival rates. It was a resounding success.
