BUCKNELL, England — A teenage girl died and three relatives suffered suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a Midland campsite after sleeping with a used disposable BBQ in their tent.
The family, who have not been named, were at the Baron at Bucknell campsite, Shropshire, when the tragedy happened overnight into yesterday morning.
A boy, believed to have been around 11 years old, was airlifted to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. A man and a woman were also taken to the hospital, by land ambulance.
All three were said yesterday afternoon to be in serious conditions.
However, paramedics con-firmed the teenage girl dead at the scene.
It is understood that three adult sisters were on the camping holiday at the site with their families. A campsite spokesman said one of the sisters raised the alarm at around 9.45am when she called for an ambulance.
She had gone into a tent where the two adult and two child relatives were sleeping and discovered them unconscious and with a spent disposable BBQ next to them, he said.
“It’s absolutely tragic and everyone here extends the family our deepest sympathies and obviously we hope the three people in hospital recover soon,” he added.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find CPR being carried out on a girl who was in cardiac arrest. Ambulance crews continued resuscitation efforts to restart the girl’s heart, but sadly nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead on scene.
“A boy suffering suspected carbon monoxide poisoning was airlifted to hospital for emergency treatment due to his serious condition.
“A woman and man were also given oxygen therapy and taken to hospital.”
West Mercia Police, along with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, are investigating the tragedy.
Detective Inspector Gavin Kinrade said: “We are treating the girl’s death as unexplained, but at this stage there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.”
