UK surge in emergency calls during World Cup

Paramedics were forced to deal with an extra 400 emergency calls over the weekend

WEST MIDLANDS, England — Midland paramedics were forced to deal with an extra 400 emergency calls after England’s World Cup match at the weekend.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said there was a 30 per cent rise in 999 calls from 3pm on Sunday until 3am yesterday.

“Despite the Trust putting additional ambulances and rapid response vehicles on shift to cover the anticipated extra calls, the service still experienced a very high demand,” said John Hawker, Service spokesman.

“Most calls were related to trips, falls, reports of assaults and also alcohol related incidents.

“The ambulance staff that were on duty around the region and also in the Emergency Operation Centres worked extremely hard to ensure that every person that needed medical treatment received it as soon as possible during this extremely busy period.”

There were just over 400 extra emergency calls than that day the previous year.
