RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wake County EMS unit was hit by a car in a busy North Raleigh intersection Tuesday afternoon, sending two people inside the ambulance to the hospital and causing three other vehicles to wreck.

It was unclear whether a patient was inside the ambulance.

The EMS vehicle had its lights on and siren activated on East Millbrook Road at 1:43 p.m. when a 1999 Pontiac coming from Falls of the Neuse Road jutted into the intersection, apparently unaware of the approaching ambulance, according to an accident report by a Raleigh police officer who witnessed the wreck.

The Pontiac, which had music blaring, struck the ambulance and hit two more cars entering the intersection from Millbrook Road. The ambulance hit a fifth car.

Susan Boykin, who was driving the ambulance, and James Japhet, a passenger, were treated for injuries.

Bruce Robert Herrmann, 41, was charged with driving unsafely and with a revoked license, according to the accident report.
