S.D. woman becomes EMT to help rural neighborhood

Living on a remote ranch west of the river with four small children, Kandace Kritz worried about what might happen if anyone suffered an accident.

“It was like child abuse, not having anyone nearby to give medical care,” Kritz said. “The response time from Philip was an hour and a half. The response time from Pierre was an hour and half. A lot of bad things can happen in an hour and a half.”

Between carting her boys to ball games and her baton-twirling daughter to perform at parades, Kritz made a promise to herself to take emergency medical technician training to help her neighborhood.
