The Missouri Department of Corrections established its first written procedure for lethal injections Friday but was unable to meet a federal judge’s Saturday deadline to find an anesthesiologist willing to perform lethal injections.
Eighth U.S. District Judge Fernando Gaitan Jr.’s requirement of a written protocol for lethal injections is one of a number of recent rulings that have occurred after a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June that allowed death-row inmates to file appeals challenging lethal injection.
In the June 26 ruling, Gaitan created guidelines for Missouri’s execution procedure and required the Missouri Department of Corrections to file a written protocol for executions by Saturday.
