UK drivers ignore ambulance parking plea

Residents of Glovers Court have complained that fire and ambulance vehicles are unable to reach the complex because of parked cars

WILTSHIRE, England — Pleas to motorists to stop using parking places intended for a sheltered housing complex in Malmesbury appear to be falling on deaf ears.

As the Standard reported last month, residents of Glovers Court have complained that fire and ambulance vehicles are unable to reach the complex because of parked cars.

Even the marked ambulance bay itself is obstructed.

Nurses and carers struggle to find spaces and some more disabled residents have found themselves virtually housebound.

Now the residents committee has appealed to the Malmesbury Area Board for help in finding a solution.

“This is a frequent problem with potentially fatal consequences,” said the committee said in a statement: “There are seven Glovers Court residents with cars who find it impossible to park and often have to walk some distance carrying heavy shopping bags.

“Also if they attend any evening function they are forced to park and walk a considerable distance in the dark.

“This is unacceptable since these are vulnerable people at risk and able-bodied persons are using the car park.”

The board has promised to look into the problem, including the possibility of stopping up the road and creating an official residents parking scheme.
