Wrong-way driver crashes into Fla. ambulance

The driver died on the scene; two EMTs were treated for minor injuries

TAMPA, Fla. — A driver going the wrong way on Interstate 275 crashed head-on into an ambulance early Friday morning.

The driver, a man in his 20s or 30s, died on the scene. He hasn’t been identified yet.

EMTs Tarel Omar Peralta, 24, and Kemecia Tasha Gaye Smith, 24, were both taken to a hospital with minor injuries, WFLA.com reports. The ambulance was not transporting any patients at the time.

The accident occurred around 2:44 a.m. The driver of a Honda Accord was going west on eastbound lanes on Interstate 4. It then entered I-275 and continued north in the southbound lane.

The Transcare ambulance was going south on the highway and the two vehicles crashed head-on. The Honda flipped and came to a stop inside the southbound shoulder of the highway. The ambulance also came to a stop on the shoulder.

Police suspect alcohol or drug use was a factor in the crash.
