PESHTIGO, Wis. — A 76-year-old woman and her dog, also in the car, were killed after she turned her vehicle into the path of a southbound ambulance. The driver of the ambulance, an EMT, and the ambulance patient were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
The ambulance was traveling south on U.S. highway 41 from Escanaba, Mich., reported WBAY.
The ambulance was not transporting in emergency mode and did not have its lights or sirens activated at the time of the collision.
The driver of the ambulance was said to have suffered the most serious injuries of the three people in the ambulance, reported WBAY. The EMT that was tending to the patient was evaluated and released from the hospital, reported the Eagle Herald. The ambulance’s patient was re-assessed and then transported by another ambulance service.
After the collision, the ambulance traveled across the northbound lanes of Highway 41 and came to rest on a set of adjacent railroad tracks. The train crew was alerted of the ambulance and able to stop close to the accident scene.
